Assumptions can be dangerous things since people rarely take the time to question or examine them. By definition, we live our lives accepting assumptions. In fact, it is mainly impossible to do otherwise. Most assumptions turn out to be true, but those that do not can be a major setback to individuals, industries, and even entire civilizations. The assumption for centuries that Yellow Fever was caused by “bad air” contributed to the deaths of millions of people. The assumption that a machine that was heavier than air could not fly discouraged people from even trying. Most of us have a natural resistance to challenging assumptions. When the 19th-century Impressionist painters were presented to the established French art schools they were shunned and ridiculed because they did not align with the assumed ideal for art.
